Google Search Now Promotes Mobile-Friendly Sites

Some are calling it Mobilegeddon. Starting today April 21, Google has updated its search algorithms to favour websites that work well on mobile devices.

How is your website doing? Some estimates point that as many as 40% of the top websites are still not mobile-friendly and will be adversely impacted.

What you need to know

  • The algorithmic update from Google affects only mobile searchers. As such, mobile-friendly websites will be promoted when somebody make searches on mobile smartphone devices, not tablets.

  • Today, it is important that you have a website that is mobile-friendly. After all, more and more users are accessing websites from smartphones and tablets. According to a recent Comscore report, 31% of all traffic to the top 10 digital properties were mobile-only visits.

  • Using Google Webmaster Tools, you can use the Mobile usability report to highlight major mobile usability issues across your entire site, not just one page.
