31 October 2017
2016 marked a shift in global sentiment from liberalisation towards protectionism, with key events such as Brexit and the withdrawal of the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) painting a seemingly bleak picture for trade. Yet, opportunities remain aplenty for Singapore especially in our region through the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, as well as with major trading partners across Asia.
Services trade has also grown in importance, as reflected by the increasing proportion of services trade in many developing countries’ economies. In 2016, Singapore’s exports of services grew to an all-time high of S$206.7 billion, with exports of architectural and engineering services amounting to $377.8 million and $5.2 billion respectively.
In the face of an increasingly unpredictable trading environment, Singapore’s Free Trade Agreements (FTA) network serves as an ‘insurance’ to provide legal certainty and stability for our companies engaged in services trade.
HIGHLIGHTSThis roundtable provides an overview of trade in services, and would help companies gain a deeper understanding of the following issues:
- What are the relevant trade rules for services in FTAs?
- How do I read a services schedule?
- What are my trading partners obligated to give me?
- Which markets should I consider venturing into?
- What are the ongoing developments in international fora pertaining to environmental services?
