The Straits Times and The Business Times, in collaboration with GuocoLand, is organising a 4-part series entitled Cutting Edge.
The 2nd live lecture will be held on Monday 25th March at Sofitel Singapore City Centre Hotel (9 Wallich Street, S078885), Wallich Ballroom, Level 5 at 10am where entrepreneur, venture investor and mentor Jenny Lee, will share her experiences and lesson from the start-up world.
Speaker Profile:
Ms. Jenny Lee, the only female Managing Partner at GGVC, Shanghai, China, joined in 2005, and was instrumental in setting up the company’s presence in Shanghai. The firm manages about US$6.2 billion in assets, investing mainly in technology start-ups in the US and China. In its 18 years of existence, it has invested in about 300 companies at their various stages of growth – from seed and early stage to expansion stage. She’s most well-known as an angel investor in Xiaomi, the omnipresent Chinese mobile phone maker which is the fourth largest smartphone maker in the world.
Another of the firm’s big bets was the ubiquitous Alibaba. GGVC first invested in the fledgling Alibaba in 2003 for about US$8 million. When Alibaba went IPO in 2014, GGVC made a 30x gain.
Ms. Lee attributes her success to two factors – her independence and sensitivity to the market. Her talent in spotting winners has earned her accolades in the Forbes Midas List many times since 2014.
In 2016, she was ranked 17, and one of the only two selected from China recognised by The New York Times and CB Insights Top 100 venture capital investors worldwide.
In 2018 she was ranked 87 in Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list.
