OVERVIEW

An epidemic of age-related degenerative diseases is upon us. Chief amongst these, in the neurological realm, are Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease (PD). It has been exactly 200 years since the first detailed description of PD was published by James Parkinson, in 1817. In this lecture, Professor Dr Lim Shen-Yang will examine what PD is, how our understanding of the disease has evolved over the past two centuries, state-of-the-art treatments, and some perspectives on what the future might hold.

Professor Lim will also present an overview of the neurological specialty of "Movement Disorders", the prototype of which is PD, but actually a field which covers hundreds (if not thousands) of other diseases as well, including those in which excessive bodily movements occur (tremors, spasms, tics, etc.). His presentation will include a lively visual tour, with numerous patient videos and anecdotes as examples.

Professor Lim will also touch on broader issues regarding medical care in the modern age - these principles are thus relevant not only to people living with Movement Disorders, but indeed to each and every one of us as patients, on the receiving end.
