OVERVIEW

Our planet is in crisis; greenhouse gases are blanketing the atmosphere, melting the polar ice caps, causing methane to leak from the tundra and threatening the food chain.  Renewable energy is still decades away from being a commercially viable alternative and nuclear energy is still facing political headwinds.

Here in Singapore, land reclamation with sand imported from Southeast Asia is unsustainable. Singapore has to find sustainable alternatives.

Mr Lim Soon Heng, a fellow of IMarEST and founder President of the Society of Floating Solutions (Singapore) will share the phenomenal development of massive floating structures.  He will make the case that thousands of hectares of land now used for fuel storage, power plants, shipyards, farms, golf courses and recreation parks can be relocated offshore, thereby freeing up land for housing, 4IR industries and reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

Mr Lim Soon Heng, a fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST), is a marine and mechanical engineer. His experience includes the design and construction of marine structures that are rigidly fixed and loads flow from above water to the seabed through piles and those that float where the load is supported by forces of buoyancy. The former fight against hydraulic forces. The latter capitalise on them.

The uncommon dual experience in bottom-founded and floating structures has enabled him to better appreciate the advantages of the latter over the former.

He is the founder President of the Society of Floating Solutions (Singapore), the mission of which is can be found at www.floatingsolutions.org.
