Date: 10 July 2025
Time: 1500 to 1630 hrs
Venue: Learning Oasis 1, School of Science & Technology (SST)
Registration is free.
This workshop, which is organised by the Association of Mathematics Educators (AME) - Department of Mathematics and Mathematics Education (National Institute of Education) and hosted by SST, is highly relevant for primary and lower secondary mathematics teachers.
Biography.
Behiye Ubuz is a professor in the department of Mathematics and Science Education at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Türkiye. She received her BSc and MSc from the Middle East Technical University and her PhD from the Nottingham University, United Kingdom. She served as the dean of the Faculty of Education from February 2021 to January 2025. Prof. Behiye Ubuz’s research focuses on teaching and learning processes, as well as test development, mainly in the contexts of calculus, geometry, and algebra. She is particularly interested in how students understand mathematical concepts and how different instructional approaches—such as drama-based instruction, project-based learning, and STEAM—affect their learning.
Abstract.
Having deep procedural knowledge of angles and polygons refers to knowing how to use the three major elements (i.e., applying figural procedures, using corresponding geometric statements, and making arithmetical calculations) to find the unknown(s) for solving “geometric calculation” questions. In the workshop, we will explore deep procedural knowledge and engage with geometrical questions using these three key elements.
