Understanding Services in Free Trade AgreementsInfo-Communications Technology (ICT) Services25 April 2017 |
2016 marked a shift in global sentiment from liberalisation towards protectionism, with key events such as Brexit and the withdrawal of the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) painting a seemingly bleak picture for trade. Yet, opportunities remain aplenty for Singapore, especially in our region through the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, as well as with major trading partners across Asia. Services trade has also grown in importance, as reflected by the increasing proportion of services trade in many developing countries’ economies. In 2016, Singapore’s exports of services grew to an all-time high of S$206.7 billion, with exports of ICT services amounting to S$8.9 billion. In the face of an increasingly unpredictable trading environment, Singapore’s Free Trade Agreements (FTA) network serves as an ‘insurance policy’ to provide legal certainty and stability for our companies engaged in services trade.
