Water Story – from Resilience to Biophilia (PUB)

Look into the past and present of Singapore waterways and water bodies. See how Singapore has transformed their once ugly drains and canals into clean river and beautiful waterways. This tour will bring you on a journey of a water story beginning with resilience building and now transformed for biophila. Be surprised by how Singapore engineers work with landscape architects to transform some of these urban and residential spaces.

One of the largest and most popular parks in Singapore, Bishan Park was redeveloped in 2009 under the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme. The 2.7km-long concrete canal that ran along the length of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park has been transformed into a meandering river, and integrated with the park. During dry weather, the gently sloped riverbanks form part of the park and in a storm, it becomes part of the conveyance channel to channel stormwater into Marina Reservoir.

Waterway Ridges is a pilot project to test the effectiveness and feasibility for implementing ABC Waters design in a holistic manner within a public housing precinct. ABC Waters design features like bioretention basins and vegetated swales are integrated with the landscape area within the precinct to detain and naturally cleanse rainwater runoff before it flows into the nearby Punggol Waterway and eventually to the reservoir.
