Show Digital: Signage and Your Event

As I’ve alluded to many times before, and on the off chance you haven’t noticed it yet, it is the 21st century. And while most of the world still lives without the internet, you, the urban elite, are obviously reading this on the web and thus are a member of the digital age.

To be honest, that’s only tenuously related to what this article is about.

One of the goals of you as an event organizer is to make sure your guests and attendees have the most pleasant and hassle-free experience possible. A lot of this has to do with signage. In this article, we will discuss just why digital signage is, on the whole, a great thing for your event and why you should incorporate this into your planning.

What Is It (In Which I Quote Directly From Wikipedia)

“Digital signage is a sub segment of signage. Digital signages use technologies such as LCDLED and Projection to display content such as digital imagesvideostreaming media, and information.[1] They can be found in public spaces, transportation systems, museums, stadiums, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and corporate buildings etc., to provide wayfindingexhibitionsmarketing and outdoor advertising. Digital Signage market is expected to grow from USD $15 Billion to over USD $24 Billion by 2020.”

Advantages

There are many advantages digital signage enjoys over its non-digital brethren, and I’m sure you can think of very many. In this article though, I would like to highlight the 3 main reasons why this is something worth having at your event.

Interactive

We live in a world that is dominated by real-time news and activity. With that I mean that you can simply turn on the TV or your computer and immediately know what is happening virtually anywhere in the world. For better or for worse, this has made our culture one that is very attuned to the immediacy of the moment. At your event, your guests will post pictures, videos or comments about the activities on their social media networks and this will be broadcast to a worldwide audience.

This is something that we should take into account and, indeed, take advantage of. Digital signage is well-positioned to do just that. The ability to incorporate real-time social media activity by your guests is a huge plus in the For column. This will appeal especially to younger crowd goers and gives your event the veneer of being up-to-date, relevant, and in touch with the web-savvy cool kids. Furthermore, broadcasting tweets, status updates or pictures help to engender a positive vibe throughout your event and this will make a good difference in the vibe and morale of the place.

Dynamic

When we think about a feature we would like to have at events, it should go beyond merely being functional to ideas that are already entrenched in the way we conceptualize events. Actually, new-ish technology like digital signage systems open possibilities to the activities we can have at events. Prominently placed signs, for instance, mean that crowds can be directed to different places much easier than before, and for planners, this gives them a chance to plan activities that involve mass movement where in the past this would have been logistically challenging or impossible.

The dynamism of digital signage also means that audience participation in activities is a further possibility. On-the-spot crowd polls can be done and speakers can use various means to gauge audience reactions. This all adds to the fact that digital signage now means new things can be tried and used to enhance the whole experience of the event.

Same Old, But Better

Apart from all of that, of course, digital signage can do all the things that regular signs used to do, except even better. All the information you want displayed will still be there, for instance, but now your event doesn’t have to fear a sudden change in schedule and the panic in information-dissemination that will ensue. With digital signage, that is a cinch.

There is also room for a lot more information, and that creates space for more advertisements as well. Pitch this to your sponsors or potential sponsors and assure them that they will get more than adequate ad room and perhaps you won’t have to worry about how you are going to fund your new digital signs!

That’s It

There’s a whole host of technological options just waiting for you to explore and event planners must remain actively open to just how all these can contribute to a more splendid event experience. Digital signage is just one of those things but it can certainly take your event to a whole different place.
