How Apple’s iWatch Can Revolutionize the Event Industry

In August 2011, Apple filed a patent titled “BI-STABLE SPRING WITH FLEXIBLE DISPLAY.” This points to the start of the evolution of wearable technology. We look at the patent filing in detail and make some predictions on how wearable technology such as Apple’s rumoured “iWatch” can possibly revolutionize the Events industry:

Real-time video streaming

In the patent filing, the term “wearable video” is mentioned no less than 28 times, so there’s no doubt that video will be a big thing for iWatch. Imagine short video introductions of each session or track to better describe what each event session means to each and every attendee. The beauty of the device is also that it will orientate into a viewing position suitable for the user.

Time-agenda sychronisation, with alert

Blinking lights on the edge of the display can signal the next thing that’s coming up on the agenda, such as a track starting time or a lucky draw taking place.

Location sensing technology for Lead Generation

As the “iWatch” Wireless communications antenna allows 2-way communication with a portable electronic device (read: iPhone, iPad), it is a possibility to use this for lead generation, where each booth is armed with a compatible electronic device to detect the profile of the user upon specific proximity within the booth area, and transmit and receive information from the iWatch for lead generation purpose.

Real-time polling

As the screen size is unlikely to be anywhere near the size of an iPhone, the usage of real-time polling (in place of text inputs for surveys) would be very useful to generate real-time response from the audience.

Motion-sensing for rewards

As the wearable device has motion-sensing capabilities (think Nike’s fuel band), event organizers can jolly well introduce incentives for greatest area covered during the event, since the distance covered can be tracked, to add an element of fun into the event.

Maps integration

Holding a large-scale outdoor event? Having an app linked to Maps by Apple or Google Maps could be something that will be fun if you are running a corporate retreat for companies with the budget to introduce wearable technology into the fold.

It is probably still early days but the introduction of wearable technology could possibly revolutionize the events industry in the years to come.
